FLOORING PLUS ROCHESTER

While hardwood floors are aesthetically pleasing, they do require care and upkeep to keep their beauty, just like any other form of flooring. See our advice on maintaining hardwood floors, which includes how to wax, buff, and polish them.

HOW TO WAX HARDWOOD.

For untreated hardwood floors, paste wax is fantastic; however, it is not recommended for use on urethane or no-wax finished hardwood. Similar to applying wax to an automobile, waxing hardwood floors is a straightforward but time-consuming process.

Wet a fresh cotton cloth free of lint and dip it into the floor wax. As directed on the wax package, apply the wax to the hardwood floor in a light, even layer. Wax liquid can also be utilized. Before applying wax, some floors may need to be sanded.

Note: Only clean floors that have been prepared in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations should get wax application. Always operate in a room with enough ventilation. To prevent getting tired, take frequent pauses. If the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, apply several coats. The wax will look foggy or hazy as it dries. This means it’s time to proceed to the next stage, which is buffing.

HOW TO BUFF HARDWOOD.

Hardwood floors can be buffed by hand, but renting an electric buffing equipment might be more convenient. Wax is incorporated into the hardwood with the use of a buffing machine, which helps create a barrier against moisture, dust, and debris. Pay attention to all of the directions that come with the buffing machine, especially the one about installing the buffing pad.

When buffing hardwood floors, start in the corner of the space furthest from the door and move around the back of the room from left to right. Always use two hands to handle the buffing machine while working slowly and cautiously. To work in the wax, use this motion of buffing left to right as the buffer spins clockwise. Depending on how big the space is, you might need to pause, check the buffing pad, and replace it if necessary. Once you’ve finished the entire room, you’ll probably need to go back and manually buff the corners and other hard-to-reach places that the buffer didn’t reach.

HOW TO POLISH HARDWOOD.

After being waxed and buffed, a hardwood floor can be polished to help bring back its luster. Never use urethane finish to add gloss to a hardwood floor that has been waxed. It’s back to the buffing machine and polishing cloth for a glossy sheen.

To attain the desired glossy appearance, rebuff the floor after attaching a polishing cloth to the buffing machine. To maintain their beauty over time, hardwood floors require proper maintenance.
