FLOORING PLUS ROCHESTER

Learning how to properly maintain your hardwood floors is essential in order to keep them looking fresh and new. We understand that new hardwood flooring is an investment, so you should invest your time to learn how to property maintain them.

We love helping our clients make the perfect flooring selection that best suits their lifestyle. But it’s also important to us to help educate our clients on how to best upkeep their new floors so they can preserve it’s beauty and longevity.

Here are some helpful ways to preserve the original beauty of your hardwood flooring.

Clean Up Spills As Quickly As Possible.

Since hardwood is a porous material, it’s easy for moisture to absorb into it. Small spills, even from water, may appear as stains. It’s important to be proactive and clean up any liquid spills off the surface as quickly as possible to avoid it soaking in and becoming absorbed into the material. With large amounts of sitting water, it is possible for it to cause your floors to swell, buckle, or even cup.

Daily Care.

It’s important to stay proactive by sweeping or dusting your floors on a daily basis. By doing so, it prevents your floors from collecting dust and dirt build up on its surface. It’s important to be on top of preventing buildup because eventually, that build up can become abrasive, just like the grit on sandpaper. Your body weight on top of those abrasive particles may act together and accidentally grind down the finish on your floor. A soft bristle wand head or a microfiber cloth will easily do the trick.

Weekly Care.

We also recommend vacuuming your floors weekly to ensure that there are no left over dust or dirt build up that’s hiding from us during our weekly cleaning schedule. When vacuuming your hardwood floors, it’s important to make sure to have your vacuum setting on “bare floor” mode.

Monthly Care.

It’s recommended to set a habit to treat your floors by cleaning them at least once a month with the manufacturer’s recommended hardwood floor cleaners.

Please, always read the recommendations specified by the specific brand of your hardwood before selecting a cleaning product. This information can easily be found on the manufacturer’s website under their warranty information. You can also access this information by calling your manufacturer directly.

Every 3-5 Years.

To keep your floors looking fresh and new, it’s important to give those beautiful planks some TLC about every 3-5 years with a new coat of finish.

Do Not Steam Clean Or Wet Mop Your Hardwood Floors.

Since water and wood don’t mix well, it’s important to avoid cleaning methods that involve the use of water such as steam cleaning or wet mopping. Even just a small amount can make your wood planks expand and cup. The finish can also be worn off due to water exposure, leaving it matte, dry, and dull.
